How it works
- 01Create the character
Give it a name, a one-line description, and one to three reference images from your account — or describe the person and a reference portrait is drawn for you.
- 02Name it in a scene
A clip scene or a presenter names the character. Its reference images go to the model with the shot, and its description joins the prompt.
- 03Reuse it
Characters belong to your account, optionally scoped to one site. The next film uses the same name — and gets the same face.
Where a character appears
- In a full-frame clip scene: B-roll with a recurring person, mascot or product.
- As a presenter in the corner, talking over the real recording of your site.
- In as many scenes and films as you like — it is made once and named again.
Best practices
- A clear face reference: facing the camera, even light, a plain background, and no text anywhere in the picture — text in a reference teaches the model to draw text.
- Three views beat three copies: a face, a three-quarter view, a full body.
- A simple wardrobe, described the same way every time. Logos and busy patterns are the first things to drift.
- One character per clip. Two named people in one shot is where identities blend.
- Short lines: one or two sentences per clip, in quotation marks. A clip lasts seconds, not minutes.
Limits
- Paid plans only, from Starter, like all AI generation.
- Up to three reference images — the most Veo 3.1 accepts, so a fourth would never be seen.
- References must be images on your account: a generated still, an asset from your bank, or a shared commons asset.
- The narration is the film's text-to-speech voice. When a character speaks inside a clip, that voice and the lip movement are generated by the video model — not the narrator, and not a clone of anyone.
- Consistency is strong, not perfect: hair, clothing and background can vary a little from clip to clip.
A real example
Sam was created with one sentence of description and one drawn portrait. Every clip of this film named him, and he stayed the same person throughout — here, presenting while the real PageToVid site is filmed.
What it costs
Naming a character from images you already have is free. Drawing a reference portrait costs 40 credits. The clips a character appears in are charged as clips: the house clip is 160 credits, and other models are priced per second.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a character?
Through an AI assistant connected to PageToVid — Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, the VS Code extension — with the create_character tool, or with POST /api/v1/characters. Give a name, and either reference images from your account or a description of the person to draw. There is no character screen in the web editor yet.
Can I use my own photos?
Yes, once they are on your account: upload them to your bank and use them as references. Use pictures you have the rights to, facing the camera, with no text in them.
Does the character keep the same voice?
The narrator is the film's text-to-speech voice and does not change. A line a character says inside a clip is voiced by the video model, and the lips come from the model too, so that voice can differ from one clip to another.
Can a character appear in several films?
Yes. Characters belong to your account, and can be scoped to one site. Any later film that names the character uses the same references.
How many characters can I have?
As many as you need. Each name is unique on your account: creating a character with a name you already use updates that character.
Is it on the free plan?
No. Characters are part of AI generation, which is included from the Starter plan.
